Sven Kramer and the Dutch Think NBC is Stupid, Too
By Ian Fortey
Times are tough over at NBC. Not only do they have to deal with the groundbreaking expose we wrote on them yesterday, plus all that ill will from Late Night fans and their current Olympic coverage debacle, apparently it’s standard practice to be an ass in front of Olympians when you’re covering an event. And that shit might fly with the Swiss but man, the Dutch aren’t having it.
Just after winning gold for speed skating, an NBC reporter asked Sven Kramer if he wouldn’t mind saying his name, where he’s from and what he won for the camera. Kramer responded with the classic retort “Are you stupid?”
FunnyCrave staffers actually called a meeting after this to see if we could brainstorm a more awesome reply. You need to factor in the Dutch accent, the fact it was completely off the cuff and the utter simplicity of the statement and the closest we could get was “Duuuurrr!” accompanied by some chest thumping, but even that doesn’t fully encapsulate the simple beauty of “are you stupid?”
Because he’s a speedskater, he’s on his toes so he followed up “are you stupid?” with “hell no, I’m not gonna do that.” Presumably that was because he assumed she was too stupid to figure it out on her own.
Now mostly this story is focused on Kramer and his ability to cut to the heart of an interview like a champ. Because the man is a champ. And we could take a minute to then pick apart the after interview in which the Dutch reporter for some reason likens all reporters, Canadian and American, tot his one NBC reporter, even though not everyone is stupid in both America and Canada, lady, just NBC, but we won’t. Instead, we’ll see what stupid was up to.
Our man at the Olympics dropped everything and hunted this reporter down, following her through the course of her day to see if she really was stupid. You be the judge, based on these questions she asked several other Olympic athletes.
- Do you think you would have done this good at the Summer games?
- How did you win the gold? Was it by being faster than the guy who won silver?
- Can you spell “ski” for me?
- Why is it called curling if nothing curls?
- I could probably beat you at hockey
- Remember when I used to work at Entertainment Tonight?
- Remember when I used to work at MTV?
- Doesn’t all this ice make it too slippery to skate?
- Are you cold?
- Dutch? Is that in Austria?
- I dunno, I always thought Leno was funny

I worked in TV for over 10 years. This is journalism 101. Ask the person's name, how to spell it and where they're from. The editors have miles of footage to sift through and they need to know this. The editors will then have the information for the supers. (The information that is at the bottom of the screen or the lower third).
99% of the time the general public will not know what a reporter has to do to prep for the interview. Most likely she was interviewing someone else and got the signal to interview, 'the whoever wins the gold medal of the next race'. Yes, there is more to the job then a pretty face and shoving a microphone into someone's face.

Yeah, but where do Dutchmen hurling insults fit into that?
