Everyone enjoys a one-hit wonder retrospective. They make you go “oh man, that song was awesome! The guy who sings it works at the Taco Bell by my place now” and you and your friends listen to it and then go on with your day. But how does a musician get to that point? How do you storm the airwaves with a song and then fade into obscurity so quickly, never to have a hit again? Funnycrave sent one of our interns to Hollywood to find out. And with Billboard’s list of One Hit Wonder’s of the 2000’s as his only research material, he came up with this.
#1: Daniel Powter – Bad Day
How did Powter score so big with this then bomb like nobody’s business for the remainder of his career? Possibly because in 2006 every suckhole movie and TV showed used this as their “aww shucks” song. Nobody likes “aww shucks” songs.
#2: Terror Squad – Lean Back
Hip hop has a long, lustrous history of making up shitty dance crazes. We’re looking at you, Souljah Boy. This tune could only go for so long before people realized leaning back was, in fact, just leaning back. If the pinnacle of their success was based on a maneuver used to get something slightly out of reach, there was nowhere to go but down.
#3: Crazy Town – Butterfly
A combination of the worst goddamn tattoos ever assembled in a single band and a sort of second string Red Hot Chili Peppers vibe didn’t bode well for Crazy Town. Plus, seriously, this song sucked.
#4 MIMS – This is Why I’m Hot
This is why you were a ring tone in 2007
#5 D4L – Laffy Taffy
Honestly, we can’t explain this one. Not why they were only a one-hit wonder, but how they made this a hit to begin with. What the fuck is going on in this song?
#6 James Blunt – You’re Beautiful
Mr. Blunt had just enough charm to make this popular in 2006 before everyone on earth made fun of this song. Weird Al did this song. Anyone who could work up a falsetto made fun of this song. Blunt’s next single, which kind of sounded exactly the same in that high-pitched and depressing way, didn’t thrill anyone.
We’re going to think outside the box here and suggest the only reason this band was popular to begin with was thanks to the ridiculous pun name they came up with. And no one likes a pun more than once.
#8 Blu Cantrell – Hit Em Up Style
This is a song that celebrates committing various felonies in retaliation for infidelity and is one of the more man-hating songs in recent memory. How could that go wrong?
#9 Bo Bice – Inside Your Heaven
Every American Idol winner is allowed to have one hit, that’s the standard deal Satan gives them.
#10 Dream – He Loves You Not
This band was Bad Boy Records’ attempt to cash in on the Spice Girls craze and what better way to tap into that market than with 4 underaged girls? What way indeed. As the image became sexier even the band got creeped out and eventually they fell apart.
